jim_and_bones's Regeneration Challenge. My prompt was According to the Star Trek tie-in comics and McCoy biography, Leonard doesn't have a Joanna waiting for him back in Georgia, and his father is still alive and kicking (and quite sassy). So instead of Jim going home to visit bb Joanna, Leonard takes Jim home to meet or visit with sassy older Doctor McCoy, who sees what the guys don't seem to want to admit - that they need each other.

The air was thick with humidity. Even this close to dark it was sticky, and Jim found himself longing for a cool breeze, or at least a dip in the ocean.
